Rushpaw nodded as he listened to her words, and tried to memorize them all in his head so he wouldn't forget later. It seemed simple, just make sure the fish wouldn't be able to see you standing there. His eyes widened with awe as his mentor caught the fish, and his paws itched to be sinking into soft pink flesh. He had seen warriors returning to camp with mouthfuls of prey, but he had never thought about how they caught them. Now it was his turn to return to camp with the fish. He jumped around and looked into the water. He leaned back enough so his shadow wasn't hanging over, and kept his front paws light and ready to dart forward while his hind claws sunk into the ground to keep him from sliding in. His wide yellow eyes fixed upon the surface until a flash of silver caught it. It swam closer, and just like his mentor had demonstrated, he lashed out with one paw and at once felt his claws sinking into slimy flesh. Yanking it backwards, he almost slipped in again, but sank his claws deep into the earth. Quickly he bit down on the flopping fish until it's jerking and thrashing died and it was no longer breathing. He dropped the fish on the bank and looked up at his mentor.

Lightwing was once again thrilled to see how well Rushpaw hunted, once he focused his energy. "That was perfect!" the mentor purred, her eyes bright and complimentary. "I told you you'll be the best hunter in the clan some day, right?" she added, a laugh in her voice. She secretly thought her apprentice was already one of the best hunters. He had a natural timing and instinct for it. "If you turn out to be this good at fighting, we'll have you a warrior in no time!" she laughed. Though there was some truth to her words. If he was this good at all aspects of his training, Rushpaw would advance through his apprenticeship quickly...Lightwing snapped out of her thoughts and looked back at the young tom. "Why don't we see if we can make a few more splendid catches like that, and we'll have quite a stock of fresh kill to add to the pile when we return." she mewed, preparing herself to hunt for the clan. Now that Rushpaw had proved to be such a strong fisher, she could let him work for the clan sooner, and not need to spend so much time explaining techniques.

Rushpaw raised his head and flicked his tail as he felt pride from his mentor's praise rush through him. It was a good feeling to actually do something right. But his excitement had never been containable, no matter what he did or thought. He shuffled his paws and nodded. "Hunting is great!" He meowed suddenly in the middle of her speech. Then he fell silent and listened to the rest of her words. "Okay!" He meowed, and trotted a little bit down the river bank, He turned his attention back to the river. Almost at once he spotted another flash of silver, and swung out his paw. He wanted to catch as much prey as possible to bring back to his clan mates. His eyes fell back upon the river. The ground beneath his paws felt soggy and damp, and the air seemed to grow wet. He looked up at the sky, and saw thick gray clouds lolling towards them. They were moving slowly, so they probably had a while before the storm began.

Lightwing watched her apprentice race off to hunt, and felt pleased. Not just because of how well Rushpaw was doing, but also because she had not made any huge mistakes yet. She had never mentored before, and had been very afraid that she would do something wrong. She sighed happily as she reflected on how not wrong things had been going...It was then, as the air hit Lightwing's tongue, that she tasted a storm coming. She payed closer attention to the breeze ruffling her fur, and noticed that it was damp, making her fur stick to her body more than usual. Then the warrior looked to the sky, only to find ugly dark clouds rolling toward the river, though they were still some way off yet. The she-cat decided that the hunt would need to be a shorter one than she had anticipated, and called out to Rushpaw, "That storm won't arrive too quickly, but we'll still need to be careful. A couple catches each and we will need to return to camp!" Lightwing padded up to the river, a little ways from where Rushpaw hunted. The breeze had already grown into more of a gust. The warrior gazed into the depths of the water, and spotted a fish. Her paw was as fast as ever, flicking in and out of the river in a heartbeat. She had a fish and had claimed its life before the creature could have guessed what was happening. Thunder boomed loudly in the distance, and Lightwing could tell that the storm would be harsh when it hit. She focused on her hunt, trying her hardest to catch as much as possible, before the heavy rains came. She managed to snag three fish before the storm came too close for her liking. She turned to Rushpaw, meowing instructions, "Collect your hunt and get back to camp. We shouldn't be out here for this kind of weather. Besides, we should warn the others in case the rains bring floods..." Lightwing's voice trailed off. She had seen one flood in her youth, caused by a storm as large as this. It had been devastating to the territories. She picked up her prey, and nodded to Rushpaw, waiting for him to be ready so they could get back to camp.
