Gingerheart padded slowly to the peak of Sunningrocks as the morning sun lit up dawn. Already the hues of red, orange and yellow were fading and blue and purple replaced it. It hadn't completely warmed the boulders, but she wasn't basking or relaxing, so what was the difference. Below, flowers exploded in bloom, colours ranging from opposite sides of the spectrum. Narrowing her eyes she focused her search on herbs and berries. This day she was going to introduce Foxpaw the basics, and maybe more advanced. She had heard she had a quick wit, and even tested her on it. The kit had always showed a passion for medicine cats, and secretly, the golden medicine cat knew it was too.
"Foxpaw! Are you coming?" she called patiently while squinting at the blinding sun.

Foxpaw nodded and smiled. "Just looking for Poppy Seeds. Saw some growing over here..." Foxpaw shrugged and gave up for now. Being two moons an experienced Medicine Cat Apprentice, she knew enough about herbs to get by. Actually, she knew a lot more than the average apprentice her age, as her quick wit and skill with herbs made remembering them easy. She smiled at her mentor as she hurried to catch up.

Gingerheart turned around slowly to see her apprentice coming towards her. Foxpaw was catching up after spotting some poppy seeds. She purred, "Come on, and I might show you some alfalfa!" The medicine cat apprentice was smart enough to learn some complicated herbs and poultices, though it would take some work. As a perfume of roses filled her nostrils, she sighed, enjoying the serene beauty of ThunderClan.

Foxpaw eagerly bounded along, noticing different flowers and the colors they had. There were fluffy green Horsetail leaves, beautiful purple Lavender blossoms, and other numerous plants that had medicinal value. She skipped along quickly after her mentor, much enjoying the sunny day.

Gingerheart drank deeply in, fathoming that the beautiful herbs practically lain out in front of them would provide useful medicines. Realizing Foxpaw next to her, she started, "So, I guess you know the basic herbs, from kit-hood, don't you?" Her voice wasn't sarcastic, more genuine. She stared at her apprentice, licking and pursing her lips.

"No, but last few moons you taught me a few." Foxpaw reminded her with a smile Really, she'd been taught a lot in the past two moons of her apprenticeship. She knew almost every herb, and the only one she couldn't remember were the ones she hadn't learned. She smiled at her mentor, waiting for a reply.

"Well, I think you've nailed them. I was thinking...Ah ha!" Gingerheart plucked a stalk of herbs triumphantly, inhaling its sweet scent. "This is one of them. It's called comfrey. You use it for broken bones." She placed it down, and dug a fair sized hole beside it. She dropped the herb into it, and buried some of it. "We'll come to get it later." Suddenly her gaze shifted to a golden flower near and bramble bush, and gestured Foxpaw to come. "Do you know what this herb is? Remember-golden."

"Would it be Goldenrod, used for helping joint pain? The juice can also be used to numb pain?" Foxpaw asked with a soft smile on her face. The plant was indeed very familiar, and she dug in her mind to make sure it was in fact Goldenrod. It sure seemed as much, and she hoped that she was right. She found praise delightful, as most other cats did as well. But she also knew that criticism was important and she enjoyed being wrong as well, so that she might learn something new. Smiling, Foxpaw waited eagerly for the coming report.

Thunderstreak heard noises from the bushes. She licked her front paw a bit, and stepped through, to see the medicine cat and her apprentice. "Oh, Greetings Gingerheart, Foxpaw." she said a tad surprised. "Are you gathering herbs?" she asked, a tad stupidly. DUH! Of course they're gathering herbs you fool! she thought. Thunderstreak just shook her pelt, and waited for an answer the the most dumb question she had ever asked. She gazed around, watching the colours float throughout the air, it was amazing, the forest. Always so bright, and cheery, like a small squirl finding its lost nuts..

A smile was faintly pulled across her face. Though it may have seemed as a dumb question, nobody learned by guessing things. Nodding curtly, he answered quietly, "Yes, we are. Actually, it was a training session, but that's okay." Her attention flickered to Foxpaw now, and she meowed, "Yes, that's correct. And yes it helps joint pains."

Foxpaw smiled brightly at the praise. So she was smart enough to identify any common herb and she was only nine moons old. What could she possibly learn in the following three moons? There wasn't much she hadn't already been taught, or had at least watched. She could fight - not well, but she could manage. She could gather herbs properly, name them and use them. And she had already practiced on translating StarClan signs. Even if they weren't real practice counted, right? With a sigh, she looked up at her mentor and wondered if there was anything left to learn.

Gingerheart purred, contempt in the warm sunlight. A lot of times, the weather reflected her personality. There was exceptions for rain, she felt relaxed instead of depressed or sad. The precipitation seemed to wash over her sadness or pain, like a wave of calm going through her. Shaking her orange head, she took note of Foxpaw's progress. Her exceptional behavior couldn't be compared to her own apprentice life, with her one-track mind. After ten moons she learned the basics, but at her apprentice's rate she'd learn them faster. Humming a few herb names she spotted in a melodic tone, her paws were muffled in the sound they made as she padded along, twitching her tail. A thought appeared in her mind, but it made no disturb in her head as she asked while she pointed out a new herb. "How about this one?" She asked as she prodded her paw at comfrey.

Foxpaw eagerly plodded along, her paws as silent as a day and a night and her eyes keen slits as she counted every known herb. There was all sorts of wonders to be explored throughout the day and Foxpaw could hardly begin to comprehend all of the sights, sounds, smells, and wonders that awaited her. She suddenly noticed her mentor stop and point at a new herb. After asking around the camp a few elders had been able to identify some of the mystery herbs in the den, and Foxpaw smiled as she remembered what one of the elders had told her to remember one. The big bushel of leafy green plants adorned with a single bunch of pink flowers looked soft to the touch. Comfy comfrey. "The elders called that one... comfrey?" Foxpaw asked, her big green eyes shining like a couple of leaves themselves on her soft face and small frame.

Thunderstreak nodded with embarrasment and sauntered after them. The cool of the day gave her chills. It was the middle of the summer. She stretched a bit, and spread out on the nearest large rock, letting out a long and tired yawn. Thunderstreak began licking her fur, it was ruffled, and had burs caught into tangles.

As she noticed Thunderstreak amble on, almost dawdling, Foxpaw's reply almost hit her. A sock in the face. Gingerheart stared mindlessly at the apprentice, her thoughts trailing off. She shrugged it off, pretending to be sort of pleasant. Though nothing was wrong with the warrior padding along. she felt pressured. Nervous that she'd get something wrong. And what was worse was that her fright was blanking out her mind, her obvious knowledge of the herbs.
She watched her apprentice, her shining eyes, her iridescent orbs glowing. Frantically, she answered, "That's correct. Let's move on." She quickened her pace near the gully, also gesturing Thunderstreak.
