The faintest of sounds awoke Darkstar from his peaceful slumber. The quiet scuffling of a mouse caused the Leader to raise his head, ears pricked. The small light brown creature had carelessly stumbled into the Den and was searching for food. Watching the mouse, Darkstar silently stood up. Dropping down into a hunter's crouch, Darkstar stalked slowly toward the mouse. Lifting his paw, the mouse froze and looked at him.
Their eyes locked and Darkstar could sense the fear pulsing through the little animal. Without another thought, Darkstar slammed his paw down on the mouse, swiftly breaking it's neck. The mouse lay limp beneath Darkstar's paw and Darkstar knew it had suffered no pain. He did not care though. Pain was something he endured as a kit, and would live with the rest of his life.
In the end, there is alway hurt and misery. Grief and sorrow. For, all live must come to an end eventually. Lifting his paw and stand up strait, Darkstar stared at the dead mouse. "Thank you StarClan for providing food for this Clan that is needed for the survival of all creatures." he prayed silently. Darkstar was a well-respected cat, and he respected those who knew their place. StarClan, however, he had alway respected. StarClan was always with him, through all of the hard times in his life.
For that, he was grateful. Leaning his head down and taking a bite of the plump mouse, he let the warm and delicious flavor wash over his tongue. Eating the mouse in three quick bites, Darkstar picked up the remaining bones and took them outside of his Den. Digging a hole in the dirt, the Leader dropped the bones into the hole and buried them right near his Den. Gazing around the ShadowClan Camp, Darkstar sat outside of his Den.
"I wonder what the future holds for this Clan..." he thought curiously.

Darkness. That was all Hawktail could see in her dreams. This happened often, so it never bothered the tabby she-cat. Them an echoing yowl rang in her dreams and she snapped her pale green eyes open. She sat up, panting. She never could get over that dream, and she knew she never would. She decided to stay awake since she probably wouldn't fall into sleep if she tried. Lifting herself up quietly, Hawktail padded out of the Warriors' den.
Seating herself just outside the den, the dark tabby began to wash her ruffled fur. She glanced around camp and spotted her great leader. The leader that had taken her in when she was a rouge who had come from nowhere. A place far away that she had not even told Darkstar about. She snapped from her thoughts and blinked a few times before nodding a greeting to the tom cat.

Darkstar saw a dark tabby cat come out of the Warrior's Den and sit down, cleaning her pelt. As she nodded to him, he nodded in return. Standing up and arching his back to stretch, Darkstar flicked his tail. Padding over to Hawktail, he sat in front of her and gave a small smile. "Hello Hawktail," he meowed, his deep voice sounding out of place in the quiet clearing.
Darkstar's whiskers twitched as a breeze carrying the scents of the marsh washed over the Leader. "Did you have a good sleep?" he asked. It was weird. The only cat that he can sit down and talk to was Hawktail. Maybe it was taking her in from her rouge life that made him interested in her, but he truly didn't know.

A breeze gently stole through camp, rustling reeds, and sending a few sray leaves swirling into the air, before letting them drop softly back to the Earth. The breeze became caught in the side of the elder's den, waking Brownfoot from his sleep. He had been having no dreams, so the old tom was not bothered by being woken. Instead, he stood to strech himself out, ignoring the creaks of protest from his joints and bones. Brownfoot had not been an elder for too many moons now, but already felt grateful for not needing to fight and hunt each day. He did not think his joints would handle that life well. A good daily run around the territory, and he needed to nap for several hours to help them heal! He almost laughed out loud, and probably would have, but he knew the rest of the camp must be sleeping, from how quiet the place was. It was right then that the sound of a conversation hit the elder's ears. Brownfoot stood to look out of his den. He recognized his leader right away, but it took a moment for his old eyes to realize that the leader was speaking to Hawktail. The former rouge, now accepted Shadowclan warrior. Brownfoot gave his bed of moss a fleeting glance, and decided laying without dreams wasn't as appealing as joining his leader's conversation. The tom walked quietly over to Darkstar and the she cat. "Greetings to you both. What keeps the two of you awake?" he meowed softly, so as not to disturb the other clan members.

Darkstar looked at the Elder that padded over. Dropping his smile a little, he nodded in greeting. "I could not sleep, so I came out for a walk and saw Hawktail." Darkstar mewed. The quiet of the night was now unbroken as no cat spoke. The Leader wrapped his tail around his paws and glanced up at the sky; at the moon. Looking back at the other two cats, he gave a small smile. A wind ruffled his whiskers and tangled his pelt, but Darkstar just shook out his fur and let it fall back into place.

"I am so sorry to interrupt, Darkstar, Hawktail." Brownfoot nodded to each cat as he said their name. "An old elders habit. Too many boring days in the elders den, you start to listen for interesting conversations. Or anything to break the dull, daily pattern." The tom inclined his head back toward his den. "If you wish, I will go back to my den, and forget I ever walked over here..." the old tom's eyes were glistening with the life of a younger self. "I can become temporarily deaf, and you both can talk your hearts out, and I won't hear a thing." Brownfoot gave a friendly smile, and waited for his leader's instructions.

Darkstar felt respect for the old tom, he was so kind. "I do not mind if you stay," Darkstar replied. He looked at Hawktail, wondering what she would say. "Do you mind if he stays?" Darkstar asked her kindly. The black tomcat loved it when he could show his gentle, kind side but that wasn't always something he could do. He liked it when cats wanted to talk, but not a lot at once. Speaking with two or three cats was fine, enjoyable. But speaking with a lot of other cats, all at once, was difficult for Darkstar. Oh well, maybe he'll get over that one day.

Hawktail jumped slightly as her leader came over, but she got over it quickly. "Greetings, Darkstar. No, not really," she added at his question. She had always felt such respect for the tom; he had taken her in when she had been terrified beyond compare and had been screeching for her ability to stay. Looking back on those moments, she felt embarrassed, but she quickly got over it as Brownfoot appeared.
"Hello, Brownfoot. Bad dreams kept me up..." Her voice trailed off. She listened silently as the elder meowed about interrupting and leaving if wanted. Hearing Darkstar ask her about the old tom staying, how he said it so kindly, made her a little shy. She wasn't used to having someone speak so nicely to her since her ex-mate. It stung her heart to remember that tom, but she shook those painful thoughts away. "I wouldn't mind at all if you stayed, Brownfoot. It's up to you." She glanced away and stared at the moon splashed camp. It was a beautiful sight. All three cats' pelts had caught the eerie light and they had a ghostly appearance; a group of spirits.

"I thank you most sincerely." Brownfoot meowed, nodding again to both cats. He noticed the moonlight that coated the camp, and how it seemed to warp the three cats into an image of three spirits. This thought lead the elder to wondering how long it would be now before he would be a spirit of Starclan. This thought would scare most, but this tom was not daunted by that prospect. He had always been, and would always remain, a faithful believer of Starclan. He knew in his heart and soul that his departed comrades sparkled above him, waiting for him to join their endless hunt and relaxation. His eyes turned up to the heavens, and he smiled to himself. Though he was not afraid, he also was in no hurry. It would be many moons, or so he felt, before Brownfoot joined his fallen friends.

Splashpaw awoke in the apprentice's den, hearing other cats speaking outside. Curiously, Splashpaw stood up and yawned. Stretching his back, he smiled. "Wonder who's out there,"he thought and padded out of the den. Spotting his mentor, and Leader, Splashpaw darted over. "Hi Darkstar! Hi Hawktail, Brownfoot." he mewed enthusiastically. Splashpaw sat down next to Darkstar and smiled. Splashpaw wrapped his tial around his paws neatly and waited for someone to speak.

"Greetings young Splashpaw." Brownfoot meowed. His eyes smiled at the young apprentice. He loved to see the younger cats in the clan, for they were always full of so much life and energy. "What could possibly have woken you up this fine night?" the elder purred jokingly. It seemed as though half of the camp was awake now, and clamoring to speak to the leader. Brownfoot saw that the moon was sinking lower in the sky, causing the night shadows to grow. Soon the sun would break over the horizon, and the rest of the cats would stir... Brownfoot flicked his tail back and forth, amused by how many cats seemed to have trouble dozing this night.

Hawktail watched as the apprentice bounded out into the clearing and meowed happy hellos to the cats around her. "Hello, Splashpaw," the tabby she-cat meowed when the younger cat greeted her. Her attention turned to the falling moon and she gave a small sigh. She looked to the three cats around her and nodded to each in turn.
"Urm, I think I'll head back to my nest. I don't want to be too tired when the sun rises fully." She laughed slightly, but it was a nervous laugh. She didn't like to be out in direct sunlight; it reminded her too much of her old home. The sun always shone brightly where she came from, and the memories hurt. She lifted herself up and nodded once more. "I'll be going now. Umm, bye." She turned away.

Brownfoot watched Hawktail return to her nest, and couldn't help but wonder why the shecat seemed so nervous. She had been half nervous since she came to Shadowclan. But, Brownfoot calmly reminded himself, Many former rouges and loners are nervous as they adjust to clan life. After all, they feel like all the cats are judging them. And if poor Hawktail knew how much time I just spent thinking about her nerves, why, she would have every reason to be nervous! The elderly tom smiled to himself and chose to shake all thoughts of Hawktail's personal business, including her emotions, out of his mind. Brownfoot looked at the sky, which was now a much lighter shade of blue, even streaked with purple in some places. The sun would be high in the sky before long, and the elder was feeling the tole of waking in the middle of the night to wander his camp. "Well...I think I am going to go give my joints a decent nap. See you all later!" he meowed, smiling at Darkstar and Splashpaw each in turn, before heading back to his den. There, Brownfoot curled into a tight ball, and fell into a deep sleep.

"Good-bye Hawktail, I'm sure I will see you later. Good-bye Brownfoot, have a nice rest!" Darkstar called after the Elder. A silent wind washed over Darkstar as the sun climbed higher, sending beautiful streaks of red, orange, and gold through the sky. The black tom looked down at his Apprentice. "So Splashpaw, what did make you wake up?" he asked, curious to know why his Apprentice was awake.
There was an odd silence that befell everything in the Camp. The sun dappled the ground, casting shadows upon the grass. Everything was so peaceful this morning. "Hopefully," Darkstar thought. "Hopefully this peace with last."
