Closing her eyes, the she-cat sat still, the wind swirling around her paws. Fallen oak leaves brushed over the ground, and green-leaf colors were sprouted all around her. A sigh escaped the beautiful cat's muzzle, and Whisperrain blinked open torqouise eyes. I suppose I did come here to check on the rats. We don't want anymore diseases spreading from twoleg poisoning. Standing up, the elegant cat padded over to the pile of acrid-smelling rubbish. Most of the things she couldn't identify, though she had smelled or spotted several of the trinkets lying around. Tasting the air for any scent that stood out from the otherwise disgusting stench, she was relieved to find that the twolegs had not tossed in any extra unwanted items. As long as they haven't thrown in any of the black goo they feed to the monsters, than the clan should be ok. Turning around, she let out a soft meow of surprise as her paw slipped through an opening in the pile. Pain shot through her foreleg as the limb slid into the opening, a hard, jagged metal object slicing through the flesh as she fell. Her hindpaws scrabbled for a hold on a black, rubbery, circular object and she managed to stop herself from tumbling all the way in. "Fox-dung!" She hissed, slowly pulling her paw out. She grimaced as she looked down at the scarlet coating, and the silver cat limped swiftly away from the rubbish pile. Stopping by the tree-line, she looked down to examine the wound. A long gash ran down from her shoulder to her claws, and though it was lengthy, it wasn't deep. No clear sign of infection, but I should find some marigold or golden rod quickly. Setting her paw down, she scented the air before picking up the distinctly sweet yet powdery smell of marigold. Making sure to keep off her sore limb, she limped along until she finally came to a stop at the delicate orange flowers. Bending down, she picked a small clump in her mouth, chewed it, and then spat it on the wound, gently rubbing it in with her other paw. She winced slightly at the touch, but sighed in relief as the pain slowly ebbed away to be replaced by a numbing feel. "Alright. That should do it. I can wrap it with cobweb when I get back to camp." She meowed to herself, and, mentally, she shunned herself for being so careless in the first place. You're a Medicine Cat! What will everyone think if you're the one getting yourself cut up? Shaking her head softly, she blinked as a soft sound from behind reached her ears, and Whisperrain turned her head, eyes falling on the undergrowth.

Thurshstar heard a voice, a she-cat voice, that could unmistakably have been the medicine cat's. Suspicious, he stalked his way through the marsh, sneezing slightly at the freezing rain, until he glimpsed Whisperain. The young cat was sad, or upset, or...something. He heaved in and sighed. Being a leader not only meant to lead, but to help cats through things. His brown tail flicked, and he remembered his sister sitting in the exact same spot as the other cat was, whispering, Don't worry, brother. Soon we will be united in the starry heavens, and have forever peace. The leader grunted to himself. Somebody had comforted him there, so he should comfort somebody.
"What's wrong?" he asked gently, his orange eyes radiating affection. In his heart, he always had room for the she-cat to be, and right now, it seemed like all of it was spilling out.

Blinking in surprise as none other than the clan leader stepped out, she relaxed. Well, at least it's not a fox. She thought to herself, flicking one ear to aknowledge the tom. "Nothing." She meowed bleakly, turning around again so that she was facing the carrionplace. She wasn't sure why, but she didn't like other cats asking her questions. She didn't have anything against socializing, but sometimes she felt it would be better if everyone just knew less. Then no one would get hurt as much. She thought distractedly before glancing over her shoulder at Thrushstar. "So, what's the clan leader doing out at a place like this?" She meowed, realizing self-contradictingly that she herself had just asked a question.

Thrushstar blinked. He really didn't know what to say, he had no decent reason. "Badger attacked. So I decided to come around...and check." He added quickly, he didn't really want to tell a lot. The medicine cat probably didn't need to listen. He grunted that she herself had not fully explained, and being stubborn, he walked over, and looked strangely at her. Licking his lips slowly, he replied his obstinate tone. "I don't settle for that. Come on, just something. I know we're in a hard time but hiding things isn't a way to make it through." He hoped he didn't hurt her feelings, she may be... Anti-social, isolated, shy, something popped up inside of his head, but he ignored it.

Her eye twitched, and her mouth set in a firm, stubborn line. Why is everyone so nosy? She thought, looking off into the trees. Finally, his persistant put her on edge, and, in an embarassed voice, she meowed, "I fell in a hole." And Medicine Cats aren't supposed to be careless. Well, leaders aren't supposed to be snoopy either. I guess that makes things even for now. She realized, blinking as she came across the conclusion.

''You did?" Thrushstar asked, panicked. It could have been a big hole, or something could have caught her... Come on! he ordered himself. Breathe for a moment. He dipped his head and raised an eyebrow. "Are you okay?" he checked sternly, hoping no damage was caused. The last thing needed was the healer of the Clan in trouble. Of course, there was a lot of potholes he fell into, and it didn't hurt...much. Sighing, he padded around her, gazing aimlessly at the sky.

"Well, it's not like it was anything serious." She stated simply, blinking and following his gaze to the clouds. From where she was sitting, they seemed to form treetops of white. I wonder... What does Starclan do when the sun is out? The thought suddenly hit her, and she wondered if she might be able to ask them at the next new moon. Out of the blue, she asked, "What's it like? Being obliged to always listen to everyone elses' troubles?"

Thrushstar was relieved Whisperrain was okay. As long as there as no serious damage, she'd make it out with no bad injuries. His eyes turned, however, when she stated the surprising question. Yeah, why do I stick around? he told himself, almost sarcastically. He pursed his lips together, then replied slowly. "You can sometimes be angry, or sad, or happy. Ever-changing moods is the key. If nobody asked what cat's trouble were, we'd all be complaining. Sometimes you don't want to hear them, and that's what can make you have unpredictable emotions." Gazing back at the clouds, he waited for her answer.

Hmmm... Well, I guess that makes sense. Blinking, she looked over at him, torquoise eyes still curious. A soft wind passed over the Carrion Place. and she was thankful she was upwind. "Yes, I suppose. But that still leaves the question... How can one cat be so patient after taking on everyone else's troubles?" She meowed, watching the russet tom. I wouldn't want to be a leader. All that pressure on my shoulders; I could never deal with that.

Thrushstar snorted in amusement. He almost choked on a piece of mouse when the reply hit him. But he wasn't mad. He was about to laugh, tiny tears trickling down. "I would not[/i] call myself patient, but I guess I don't rip somebody's pelt off when they try to speak. Well, I think it's just from experience. I always told the leader of stuff, of how sad I was with my parents dead or the other kits bullying me, and he always listened. He said, Everybody, from the smallest kit to the frailest elder deserves to have a voice. That's why why he was so admired. He was much better than me." He sat down, looking down at a brown, ripped up pinecone, not contacting gaze with the medicine cat.

Blinking, she raised her head, watching the sun casting a lazy shadow across the clouds. "So you're following his example..." She meowed, voice understanding. However, she had her doubts. Just from watching someone else, you can not learn everything so fast. He may act like he picked up those traits from the past leader, but truly, it is his own genuine spirit that allows him to empathize with others, too. Though I doubt he would ever admit that. It was funny to categorize cats as humble and boastful. She had met many cats from each, but what did it truly mean to be humble? After all, would such a word even exist if there were no boastful cats around? It wouldn't have a need to be around if everyone was modest, and because humble is a word used to describe a specific characteristic, it would no longer be necessary if every cat had it. Humility... One can believe they are talented and just not say it. Lack of self-esteem or self-conciousness is to truly look down on yourself... Is that the difference? She thought, tilting her head to the side. "And what about you? Surely even the mighty Thrushstar gets troubled. Whose ears do you speak to in your time of need?" Her gaze turned to the tom, calm torquoise eyes waiting for his response.

The leader glared at her, with not much warmth in them. His orange eyes blazed with serious tones, and he stopped his waving tail. A wave of anger washed over him, and he burned it out, all of it. "I'm NOT just following himself. I liked his ideas, and used them. That's not following." He thrust his head from side to side, the leader's brown pelt fluffing up in rage. He bit back a snarl. What's wrong with you? he spat to himself. It was just, he hated being compared to the deceased leader. Always, 'You got it from him', or 'You're just following him'. It felt like he didn't actually have a mind, like he grabbed onto somebody and depended on them. Though he looked up to Reedstar, his conscious was independent. And would never, ever clutch onto somebody else. "I follow myself, and StarClan. Bad memories evolved from asking other people. Except medicine cats." He sighed, then sheathed his claws. "Look, I don't now what's wrong with me, but I just...I don't know. Something's just overtaking my control of emotions."

Strangely, she remained calm despite his outburst. Cool eyes waited for him to finish, and her tail wrapped around her. "Quite done, are you?" She meowed before speaking again. "Did I say you were just like him? To put it bluntly, you are nothing like Reedstar. It is fine for cats to share the same personality traits, but that alone does not make them one and the same. We all lose our temper, Thruststar. Do you know how many times cats say I was just like my mentor, Lightshed? I do not want to be like that cat. I do not want to be compared to a traitor. However, it is not always up to us to decide what other cats see in one another. In me, they may see Lightshed, in you, they may see part of Reedstar's spirit. In their eyes, they find guidance and reassurance knowing that the ones they have lost may still be living in others, even if it is only somewhat. For the sake of our clanmates, is that not why you never unsheathed your claws at them?" Her voice grew softer, and her eyes narrowed as she blocked back all the feelings she had felt after learning of her mentor's dark secret.

"Reedstar was never like me. His spirit isn't in me. He was smart, when I'm just a stupid fool. He was loyal, when I ran away.'' Listening in anger as Whisperrain talked about Lightshed, he thought of a comeback. "At least your mentor was evil, and you aren't. They can clearly notice you're not just a replica hanging limply on a shelf. But Reedstar wasn't a traitor. And that's what gets me ticked off." He snorted. "Cats think I'm him. Pebblewhisker does. The other leaders mistook me at Gatherings." He shed a tear, a tiny droplet dissolving into the earth as it melted in. He glimpsed up. ''But then they realized. No more did they think ShadowClan was the Clan of strength, the Clan of victories. They laughed, and joked we were the junkyard Clan. I was hated at kit-hood, wouldn't leadership make it worse? Now, they think I'm leading us into death and losing."

Instantly, her pelt bristled, and her eyes glittered in dangerous menace. "She was not evil! Do not ever call her that!" Her words came out in a furious snarl, and her claws unsheathed, burying themselves in the ground. Fangs bared, she caught herself just in time. Blinking, her torquoise eyes clouded with shock, and she looked away. "I'm sorry......" She murmured, though it took a while for her fur to lie flat. Sighing, she looked at him again. "Yes, you are a stupid fool. But you can never understand another clan until you have seen things from their perspective. Thrushstar, I can tell you everything that I believe to be true. However, I can not tell you what you want to hear because than I might be lying, and if I did lie, than I would be no different than my mentor. She was not evil. I saw good in her despite her flaws, and Reedstar may seem picture-perfect, but he had his faults, too." Her eyes gleamed as her claws slid back into her paws, and the wind rustled her silver pelt. "But why do you care what the other clans think? Shadowclan believes that you are strong, and you should think of your ranking as a way for you to prove the other clans wrong. Shadowclan is just as important as any of the other clans, and it is your job as leader to show them that; just as it is my job as Medicine Cat to keep our cats healthy, and the job of your warriors to fight alongside you."
