Birch sat in the center of the old abandoned barn. Long ago, twolegs ran the place, but that had not been the case since many moons before even he was born. Many rouges and loners had lived here, including the springy young tom. He sighed as he remembered his youth. How simple things had been! He and his sister would play together, while his mother would watch them carefully. That was before mother had left, and Apple had run off with that stray. He missed them at times like these, when he was surrounded by the memories. Birch got to his paws, and walked to the door of the barn. As a loner, he went many places around the outskirts of the clan areas. Many loners would pick a place to live, and stay there. He, on the other hand, had a small cluster of places he liked to go to when he was in the area. This place, the barn he grew up in, was top of the list. Birch sat down at its entrance, taking in the smell of the splintering wood and the remaining hay. Though he wasn't here every moment, this was definitely the tom's home...

Run! You can't win this fight! Voices screamed in the little cat's head as he turned and pelted away as fast as he could. The dog's heavy breath was hot on his heels and jaws snapped at his hind paws. The beast wheeled up beside the tom and lunged sideways, just barely missing the tabby. That stupid Twoleg! This dog is going to kill me if I don't get out of here! Bleak knew he shouldn't have wandered this close to the Twoleg nests, but he had forgotten what he was doing. Spotting a fence that would be of use, Bleak shot over it, his claws fighting for a hold on the too smooth wood. Jaws snapped at his tail, and Bleak hauled himself over just in time. Landing, the little cat took off in a dead run. His front paw ached and blood from a wound above his eye was blurring his vision. He could feel each cut with every movement. His lungs felt like bursting. Then, the barn came into view. Bleak slowed and stopped, still many fox lengths from the barn. There was another cat in the doorway. The little tom's head spun wildly from the loss of blood, and the ground met him suddenly as he collapsed.

The distant sounds of a dog broke the peace that Birch had been enjoying. The dog didn't sound too close, however, but the noises were getting closer. Birch turned his head in the direction of the sounds. The dog was barking and howling, and basically going insane. Must be chasing something. Birch thought absently. The sounds suddenly began to stay in one place, and the young tom assumed that the dog had come to the fence not far away from where he sat. Birch was about to slip back into his thoughts of the past, when he spotted a cat limping toward him. The cat paused, and Birch thought it was stopping because it had seen him. It was definitely looking his way. However, at that moment the other cat keeled over, and landed with a soft thud. Birch did not pause. He raced over to the other cat's side. The cat was bleeding from several different wounds, but Birch dared not try and tend to them. If the stranger awoke to find a loner bent over his hurts, he would probably not react too happily...Birch's mind spun with ways to wake the new tom. Finally, it settle in a gentle nudge. Birch pawed at one of the stranger's non-injured spots carefully. "Excuse me." he meowed. "I would like to fix you up. Is that alright?" Birch asked, not sure he would get an answer.

Bleak opened his eyes a crack as a paw gently nudged him. Using all of his might, the little tom lifted his head to see who is was. Blinking his vision into focus, the tabby noticed that it was another tom cat. Did he just ask permission to help me? Bleak thought absentmindedly. Clearing his throat best he could, Bleak nodded. "Trust me, tom... Normally, I would get up and shred you... But... You don't need to ask permission... Just do it..." The tom's high pitched mew was weak, and he almost didn't recognize it himself due to the difference. Laying his head down on his paws, Bleak allowed his eyes to almost shut completely. His whole body was tingling and turning numb. Well... Numbness can't be that bad. At least I don't feel the pain in my wounds this way...

Birch smiled briefly, though he wasn't sure if the tom was joking or not. Maybe if he had met this cat under different conditions, the stranger really would have shredded him. "I'll be right back." Birch meowed quickly. Then he darted back to the barn. Inside, he collected large amounts of cobwebs and few poppy seeds he kept around just in case. Well, this would be that case. The young tom darted back to the stranger's side. He did not hesitate, and immediately began to clean the small cat's many wounds. He cleaned them all, sealing each one with cobwebs to prevent further blood-loss. Then he got the seeds ready. "You need to eat a couple of these. They will make you sleepy, and ease the pain. Then I will bring you to my barn. But I don't think you want to feel the drag as I get you there..." Birch meowed honestly.

Bleak blinked at the seeds. Poppy seeds, he confirmed, being sure that the cat wasn't trying to poison him. Bleak took a few of the seeds as he was told and began to feel their affect. His pain had began to ebb and his eye grew heavy. The swiftness was probably from his already-unbearable exhaustion from running and loosing blood. Bleak tried frustratedly to keep his eyes open, though. The little tom wasn't sure about this cat, or if he could trust his enough to fall asleep near him. Well... If I can't keep my eyes open, I'll fake it. Bleak shut his eyes with his head resting on his paws, and, slowing his breathing, pretended to sleep.

Birch watched the stranger drift into sleep. There seemed to be something strange about the way the injured cat slept, but Birch just assumed it had to do with his wounds. The sooner I fix him up, the better. For his sake. Thought the little loner as he notice a fresh stream of blood trickle from one of the worse cuts. Birch gently began dragging the stranger toward the barn. He was glad the cat was asleep. He had a feeling that the dragging was quite uncomfortable, and it would have become very hard if the cat was thrashing about, awake and in that pain...

Bleak felt the other cat' meet his scruff and drag him. Rocks scrapped painfully over his body, but he absorbed the pain and stayed still. His body tingled with pain and he felt his tail tip twitch once. Thank goodness that I had those poppy seeds, or I would be screaming... Bleak found himself thinking. Hardly opening an eye, the small cat looked around and found himself staring in the direction that the dog was scrambling on the other side of the fence. It was howling earlier, but a two-leg must have come and gotten it. Just wait, mutt... When I can fight again, you're the first thing on my list...
