Smiling softly, he nodded. He hesitated slightly at his next question, however. He knew that it wasn't uncommon for a father to die before his kits were born, but that didn't make it any less painful for the mother. "Is Storm... Still around?" He asked finally, looking away. I grew up with a full family. Never knowing loneliness. I had everything... And I think that it why it hurt so much when I lost it. Biting down on his tongue, he waited for her response.

{Sorry I modified, the [/b] was {/b]. I really hope you don't mind. I'll remind you next time.] Elodie shifted uncomfortably. Her mate had left when she had signs that she was pregnant. Never had she actually been with him for two whole minutes. She answered, "He left...for the Clans. His friend was Evening's father, and he wanted to make sure the kit was okay. But he hasn't returned."

[Lol, srry, that's fine. ^^ Thanks for fixing it.] Nodding, he wondered how his mother would've felt if Moon had gone off to see what had become of Thorn, Jack, and Tawny and had never returned. He shook off the thought. It's different. Storm left to check on his nephew because he cared, but dad probably would only have gone off to kill them. His eyes narrowed in concentration. It was sometimes hard to learn the truth about someone you had always admired, and even more painful to know that they had kept those secrets from you. "I'm sure that if Evening is alright now, then Storm would have been determined enough to find him without fail. The father of your kits will be fine, so you shouldn't worry." He meowed, looking back up from his thoughts.

[Oh, fhew. I thought you'd get mad.] Elodie purred. "He said he'd come back when I had kits, but I don't think so." The she-cat sighed regretfully, as if remembering the day he left. Looking back at Night, she could see significant similarities, personality wise. They didn't look a thing like each other though. Smiling just a bit, she began, "Did you ever have a mate?" Even though her doubts arose, it wasn't impossible.

[Ok, c'mon. You know me. The Great Barkberry never gets mad. ^^ Unless you go anywhere near her potato tree that is... Don't try it ] Nodding quietly, he felt a pang of sadness. The tom admired her determination and faith. To wait so long for one cat to return based only on his words... Would I ever be able to do that? He wondered, but was snapped out of his thoughts at her next question. Blinking, he was slightly startled. The idea of having a mate had never even crossed his mind the slightest. To be honest, he had grown up mostly with his family, so he'd never really gotten the chance to meet a she-cat who wasn't related to him. A mate.... Blinking, he narrowed his eyes in concentration. "Well, to be honest, I'm not even completely sure what it means to have a mate. I lived with a big family through-out my kit-hood, so I never really met any other she-cats..." He trailed off, feeling embarassed at his own naiive nature. Isn't a mate a cat you like though? No... That doesn't seem right... Hmmm.... How do you become a cat's mate? Just ask them, 'Hey, I like you. Want to be mates?' .... Probably not. Oh well. Shrugging it off, he smiled again in order to erase his ignorance.

"You haven't met a lot of she-cats?" Elodie's voice echoed in disbelief. Sure, there wasn't a crowd of them in the rogues, but there came loners and kittypets. Though really it wasn't pleasant to meet them. Trying to hide her sense of shock, she replied, "How many people are in your family? Were they murdered or something?" Her own history was small, she had parents and a sister and a brother. Nothing fancy or complex.

Looking away so she wouldn't notice how embarassed he was, he flicked an ear and winced slightly at her next question. Blinking, the tom looked back at her. However, the friendly light had faded away and was replaced with a strange emptiness, as though whoever looked into their depths would be drowned. "You could say my family had its issues. I had my mother, father, older brother, younger sister, 3 aunts, 2 uncles, and 7 cousins. All were murdered. Except for one." He meowed bleakly, as though the life had died from his voice. Casting a glance over his shoulder, he watched the rain pouring down. So dreary. I wonder if Thorn is out there, waiting to find me. No, he wasn't the kind to wait. He's probably looking right now. A sad smile crossed his expression, and he turned back to face Elodie, erasing the emotion. "But my past's not very important. I don't mean to be nosy, but how about you? What was your kit-hood like?" He meowed, settling down more comfortably and tucking his tail around him to keep it out of the rain.

Elodie gawked at Night. She could only dream of having a large family....most of them had run away or been captured on her side, and even then that wasn't many. Sometimes it hurt to discuss her family, but she knew the black tom would understand. Settling down once more, she began. " My father was a rogue and my mother was a Clan cat. My mom didn't want us in her Clan, but she didn't want us to die either. She gave us up." She swallowed, hating the next part. "But I had heard she hated us anyways, but she was killed by a Twoleg. My siblings had escaped from the wrath of our adopted parent, and it was only me. But I left, and joined here."

His eyes softened and he nodded quietly. "That must have been painful. But that also gives you the opportunity to start a new life here, and I'm sure that there are many cats glad to have met you." He purred, looking up as his features brightened. It hurt him to see anyone frowning. Almost as if every sad expression blocked out more of the stars at nighttime. Why was I named Night anyway? Oh... Well, I don't know if it was true; what Thorn told me all those seasons back, but maybe he was right... Blinking, he smiled at her. "This may sound like a strange question, but do you know why you were named Elodie?"

"Hmmm..." Elodie pondered at the rather strange question, she barely knew. Her parents had said it was because she was exactly like her grandmother whose name was Elodie. But really, why was she named it?
She stumbled for a moment, eyes confused. Then, a few seconds later she found a reply probably decent enough. "Elodie means 'gentle, kind' and back as a kit, that's what I was. But honestly, I don't know." She blushed a deep scarlet, embarrassed.

Smiling encouragingly, the black tom nodded, tail waving to reassure her that there was nothing wrong with her response. "What do you mean 'back when you were a kit'? From what I can tell, you still are both gentle and kind." He purred, eyes softening. It had been a long time since he'd had a decent conversation with any cat. The last time he'd done so had been with Streak, just before his cousin and everyone else he had ever cared about were slaughtered. He cringed slightly at the flashback, and he had to erase the scene from his mind. The night sky... Is alone. The stars are forced to dwell within its depths, while the moon scorns its dark shadows. That is what Thorn told me. I was named Night because I was destined to be hated, fated to be chased away by the sun. At night, nothing stirs, because I am alone. In the morning, the woods come to life, the streams bubble, and the mountains soar. Yet at night, there is silence. And he was right. I have nowhere to go. Not back to the kingdom; I would probably be chased away. Even here, Thorn is sure to find me. But isn't that what I deserve? To pay for my family's mistakes? If anyone is going to be killed, it should be me. I am the one who needs to pay for their sins. Then, maybe, everyone can be happy again knowing that Moon's son is no longer alive. Narrowing his eyes in thought, he stared at his paws for several moments before looking back up and grinning at the she-cat. "Well, Elodie, I think your name is beautiful. Your grandmother must have been a very kind-hearted cat. I would've liked to meet her one day."

"Well, not as kind, but I guess." She rubbed her cheek-caked with mud!-onto her chest, hating the freezing temperature it seemed to acquire. Straining her muscles, her heart sank. Talking about her grandmother made her feel uncomfortable and depressed, though it was her that started it up. That would make it her fault. Sighing, she carried on. "Yes, you'd have probably liked her."

"Well, every cat has their own way of expressing kindness. No creature is completely without it." He meowed softly, laying down to tuck his paws under him. It was warmer this way when he kept his fur compressed together. His eyes glowed suddenly, and he looked up at her, a gentle yet eager light in them. "Elodie, have you ever tried journeying to the clans?" He meowed, voice light and more energetic than it had been before.

Elodie was hit by the question hard, flinching twice. She hated speaking about them, let alone traveling to them? Never in her life! After the incident with Evening, nothing was going to have to do with them. Shuddering, she replied coldly, "I would never. Get that in your head." She didn't mean to be cruel, but she hated the Clans. Forever eternity.

Tilting his head, the tom didn't even flinch at her words. He had grown used to hearing the anger in a cat's voice, so it wasn't a surprise to him when she replied the way she did. "Ok... I've got it." He meowed softly, eyes remaining calm. He shifted slightly so that he was pressed closer to the den wall. He didn't like the open space. It almost seemed like it was suffocating him, dragging him into its empty depths. "Sometimes things... Can seem obsurd. But if we can do them to make others feel better, than I think... It is worth the risk." He meowed softly, looking down at his paws as his words died away.
