Sighing as a soft breeze ruffled her fur, the she-cat's blue eyes grew wide as she watched the sun settled comfortably at the peak of a distant mountain.
One day, I'll be watching you from there.
She thought, a determined smile appearing on her expression. Blinking away her fantasies, the she-cat scented the air as she spotted several brown, fluffy figures dotting the field.
But for now, I'm content with filling my belly here.
A sly smile appeared on Rice's face, and she crouched down, creeping towards the rabbits. However, before she had taken even four steps, the nearest prey darted away.
But I didn't make a sound!
The wind pushed her from behind, and the small cat was nearly swept off her feet by the sudden gale. That was when she remembered a vital rule about hunting.
"Mousedung, I wasn't downwind. I should've remembered that."
She meowed, sulking for a moment until she regained her confidence.
Well, that's ok. There's plenty to go around. So I messsed up, big deal. I can just try again.
This time moving to position herself downwind, the she-cat prowled across the moore, eyes set on a young hare nibbling on a heather frond.
Rice tensed and then with a powerful lunge, she flew across the ground, paws pushing strongly off the earth as she charged towards her prey. The rabbit's ears shot up in alarm, and it took off faster than she had anticipated. However, moons of living and providing on her own had toughened the young cat up, and she picked up speed until she she had dragged the animal down with her claws.
With a swift bite to the neck, she felled her prey and dug in happily, paying no attention to anyone around her.
See? I'm fine on my own.
The pretty she-cat began to eat happily, unaware of her surroundings as she dug in to her first meal in days. Her little experience with hunting had taken its toll on the young cat, and the neglect of her stomach was obvious by the way her thin frame seemed so fragile that the wind might blow her away with one puff.
