Snaketail crept forward, keeping his paws light, and his tail far from the surface of the marsh water. He heard a small splash in the distance, and a lone frog croak. This place was creepy, but also teeming with potential meals for Shadowclan. Snaketail sniffed the air, separating the smells of marsh plants and muck, from those of prey. He caught the scent of water vole on his tongue, and dropped into his hunter's crouch. He followed his nose around a clump of reeds, and heard the tiny scuffling noises from the creature. Snaketail smiled, slowly moved himself forward, and spotted his target. Locking on, the warrior pounced, slamming his paws onto the little ball of fur. Snaketail ended its life quickly, thanked Starclan, and then buried the prey. He would return for it later, but for now, he needed to hunt more...There was a rustling behind him, and Snaketail spun around, eyes alert for any kind of threat.

Hawktail prowled forward, froze, them continued. Catching frogs was her favorite thing to do, but it was difficult for the ex-rouge. She got close enough, and pounced, landing squarely on the slimy body. She snapped the neck of the new fresh-kill and covered it up with a thin layer of dirt. A new scent slammed her tongue and she drew it in, recognizing Snaketail. Her pale green eyes lit up as she realized that she had remembered Snaketail's smell, seeing as the two rarely spoke to one another. She left her catch and slipped into some bushes as she watched the tom catch magnificently. A small bug crawled past Hawktail's paw and the tabby jumped, setting the bushes rustling. She watched as Snaketail heard the noise and spun around, probably expecting an enemy. Hawktail sighed and padded out into view. "Calm down; one's here but me," she soothed.

Snaketail spotted Hawktail and smiled, feeling slightly embarrassed, but mostly relieved. No warrior fancies a fight while alone next to a death trap like the marshes. "Hey Hawktail." the tom meowed, dipping his head in greeting. "Are you out here to hunt as well?" he asked, one ear flicking lazily as a fly zoomed past it. The bug continued to whiz around him, annoying the warrior. Snaketail finally shot one paw out, smacking the creature and scaring it away from him. His snake like tail wrapped around his paws, as he waited for Hawktail to speak.

Hawktail dipped her head to the warrior. "Yes, I thought I would do some hunting, but then I spotted you." She shrugged awkwardly. Like said before, she never really spoke with Snaketail, or any other warriors for that matter. She wasn't very compatible with carrying on a conversation with another cat. It wasn't in her personality. She tipped her head toward the place where her dead frog laid beyond the bushes. "I caught a frog back there, that's when I caught your scent and followed it." Now that she said it, it sounded like she was spying on him. She shrugged at that as well. Hawktail's sideways ears swiveled as she waited for the tom to speak.

The tom smiled and laughed. "I hope you weren't hunting me next!" he purred jokingly. Then he looked back to the marshes, a second distant splash hit his ears, and he knew the place was crawling with food for his clan. "I want to catch some more before returning to camp...You are welcome to join me Hawktail." he meowed. It seemed like this would be a good chance to get to know the strange, former rouge. She was always so shy in camp and on patrols...

Hawktail smiled and allowed a small laugh to escape from her. "I'd love to join you," she purred. "But just so you know, I'm not used to hunting with others." She scented the air and found the smell of vole. She flicked her ears in the direction of the smell and dropped to a crouch. She turned her pale green gaze to the tom and whispered plans to him. "I'll go around and chase it to you, got it?" Not waiting for much of an answer, the sleek tabby crawled forward and to the side. spotting the little creature scuffling amongst the marsh, she glided forward and pounded a paw directly behind the vole, scaring it so badly that it would forget about the cat in front of it. "Get ready!" she called. Suddenly, her heart strings pulled and she was wrapped in sad memories. She hadn't hunted like this ever since she was back at her old home. She shook her head vigorously and looked back up at Snaketail, knowing that he sadness would still be showing.
OOC:: Wow, that's a long one!

Snaketail had barely gotten out a yes before Hawktail had begun to stalk the vole. He didn't mind though, and quickly got himself into position. He looked over to Hawktail, and knew something was wrong the very moment he did. Her eyes were practically unrecognizable. A moment before, they were full of mischief and laughter. Now, they were clouded with pain and hurt. Snaketail could see the she-cat was feeling extremely sad, and was torn between wanting to comfort her, and wondering if she would want him to or not. After all, she had always been independent within Shadowclan...He whispered to the warrior, "Do you need to talk, Hawktail? I'll listen, and not judge. I promise." He looked at her, his own eyes kind and caring.

"Talk? No, I... I just remembered something," the tabby warrior mewed quietly. She glanced up at the kind eyes that looked to her. She recalled the word 'promise' leaving his muzzle and she sighed. "I haven't hunted like this since..." Her mew trailed. "My old mate. He and I would go out and hunt side by side, a little different than this, but we had the same pattern." Suddenly, he pale eyes widened and, forgetting that Snaketail was even there, she yowled loudly, "I don't want to remember him! Why can't I forget him already? He got what he deserved, and I shouldn't feel this bad, but..." Her voice faded off and she pressed herself to the ground and shut her eyes tight. She prayed for the pain to sink into the earth and be absorbed. She knew Snaketail wanted to comfort her, so Hawktail flicked her tail, giving him permission to come over. Normally, she would fin a place to sort things out herself, but she just couldn't find the energy. Right now, she wanted all the comfort that could be given. Two things was sure; Hawktail was having a break down, and had major mood swings.

Snaketail listened to Hawktail without interrupting. She spoke of a mate, and pains...Then suddenly she bust out yowling, and Snaketail knew that this had to be more than a tom who left her or something. She even sounded as if she he had been payed back for being mean or something...The warrior walked over and kindly licked the top of Hawktail's head. "I don't know much about your past, but I can see that something has hurt you very deeply. I might be wrong, but I think you have been keeping it all inside. The pain I mean. I see that you are shy to hang out with others in camp, and that makes me doubt you have ever talked about this to someone. If you leave pain inside, it grows. It thrives as long as you let it stay..." Snaketail meowed. He gave Hawktail a second gentle lick. He felt really bad for the she-cat. She must have had a rough time, leaving her rouge life, separating from her mate...

Hawktail relaxed as she felt Snaketail's licks, and she listened to his words without speaking. Once he had finished speaking, her pale green eyes opened, but she looked strait ahead, not at the tom. "You're right, Snaketail. Everything you said was true. I have been keeping it all inside, and I've never talked to anyone about it." The tabby warrior blinked a few times before continuing. "But, I can't tell anyone. I told myself that if I did spill it, I would be forced to leave the Clans. Where would I go, then? I can't go back to my old home, they'll kill me if they find me." She sat up and glanced sideways at Snaketail. He seemed so nice, but she hardly knew him. She turned her head to stare hard at him. "If I tell you, you can't tell anyone. Not Darkstar, not Beechflight, no one. Promise?"

Snaketail looked at Hawktail carefully. "Unless you tell me you like to kill cats named 'Snaketail', I won't say a word." the warrior joked, though his eyes remained serious and focused. He could tell that whatever Hawktail was about to reveal to him, she probably wouldn't like him to be making too much fun about it. He watched the she-cat, waiting for her to explain what had happened to her. He remained relaxed, so as not to look like he was pressuring her. He knew that if it caused Hawktail this much inner pain, it would be very hard for her to get out.

Hawktail purred at the comment. "Don't worry. I don't like to kill Snaketails." Then she hardened her gaze and looked away. "Well you know how I came to the Clans, scared and muddy from the previous day. I had been completely exhausted from running nonstop." She hoped she was giving enough details for him to make a picture in his head. "Well, I was running for a reason. Back home, if you did something really bad, they would sent you into the forest, and, after awhile, come after you to kill you. That's what happened to me. My old mate, Gray was his name. He was perfect. Solid gray with well toned muscles, every she-cat liked him, even me. It turned out, he liked me too, and we became mates. My best friend, Rose, was so happy for me." She wondered if Snaketail would be surprised about Hawktail having a friend. She blinked. "I'm going off track, sorry. Well, it was Rose who saw... She saw me," the tabby paused. "Kill Gray."

Snaketail listened to Hawktail's story, picturing the she-cat running away from her old home. Scared, muddy, desperate. No wonder she seemed so relieved when Darkstar took her in...And then she said the words that nearly forced Snaketail to gasp out loud. "You killed your mate?" he meowed, startled. Looking at Hawktail, and remembering how hurt and upset she had looked just moments before, the tom felt there had to be a good reason for his clan mate's actions. "Why? He must've done something dreadful..." Snaketail waited for Hawktail's response. He was surprisingly calm, for having found out he was next to a murderer. He should have felt more endangered, even angry. Especially since he had known Hawktail for such a short time. But Snaketail only felt sympathy for the she-cat and her clearly haunting past, and wanted to help her feel better.

OOC:: okay, this one's gonna be long... and a little gory
Hawktail blinked in surprise. He isn't angry at me? Is he really that mouse-brained? She noted how calm he was. "Something terrible? Oh, you bet. Everyone was blind to him, and his actions. He was the perfect cat." Hawktail narrowed her pale green eyes in remembrance. "Gray was a cold-blooded killer. He had managed to kill our deputy, Red, then our beautiful leader, Swan. Swan had already appointed a new deputy before she supposedly drown. His name was Eagle, one of the best cats. I stopped Gray before he could get to Eagle." She shut her eyes and was wrapped in memories.
"Why, Gray, why?" screeched a small tabby she-cat. A large solid gray cat stood only a few tail lengths away. his frosty blue eyes remained calm. "Why, what ever are you talking about Hawk?" he meowed. He took a step forward, lean muscles glided smoothly beneath his pelt. Hawk took a step back. "You killed Red, then Swan! What do you want?" "Power!" The yowl split the air that was getting thick with the rain that would soon reach them. Hawk widened her pale eyes and stared horrified at the cat she called her love. "I deserve to be leader more than anyone else! Me!" Gray hissed. Loosing track of the world, Hawk sprang, catching the throat of her mate and sinking in razor sharp teeth. Blood poured into her mouth and the large tom screeched a blood-curdling scream. Hawk could hear the blood bubble in his mouth as he tried to cry out again. He finally fell limp, dead. Hawk released her grasp just as Rose's reddish brown pelt emerged from the shadows. "Hawk! What did you do? You monster!"
Hawktail came back only heartbeats after she had gone. She placed her head down and covered her eyes with her paws. "I'm a monster," she whispered.

Snaketail finally understood why Hawktail was always so distant and nervous. She was carrying the weight of a great grief on her shoulders. "You are no monster Hawktail." the tom meowed at last. "You sacrificed your way of life, your friendships, and you even risked dieing...all to save the deputy of your group. You are quite the opposite of a monster. You are a really good cat. The kind of cat that Starclan must be proud of." he finished, looking at Hawktail with eyes full of kindness. He truly sympathized with her. What it must have felt like, to know you had killed. And then to be unable to explain, before being exiled...He was suddenly very glad that Darkstar had accepted Hawktail into Shadowclan. If not, who knows what might have become of the warrior in front of him? Certainly she would never have been a warrior...she might not have even lived! Snaketail felt inside as though it was meant to be, that this she-cat was alive and healthy. That she would play an important role in the world of cats. "I think Shadowclan is lucky to have you." Snaketail purred at that thought.
